The Cougars are in desperate need of help in the secondary and they got some when cornerback Kevin Griffin faxed in his letter of intent today to play for Washington State. Griffin gave his verbal pledge to the Cougars in the summer over offers from Montana and Portland State.

Griffin has the size Pete Carroll likes in his cornerbacks, standing at 6-foot-1 and weighing in at 180 pounds. Griffin likely lacked other offers because of his early commitment but he's not lacking in the skill department. Griffin closes on the ball with lightning speed and once he gets there he hits like a ton of bricks. Some of the hits he lays on receivers in his junior highlight video are quite impressive.

There's a big lack of depth in the Cougars secondary, especially at cornerback. Ordinarily, you'd like to see everyone who isn't an exceptional athlete redshirt to have a year to get used to the speed of the college game but Griffin might be able to force the coaching staff's hand. Given how desperately the Cougs need help against the pass, it wouldn't be surprising to see Griffin play as a freshman.

Here's a look at his junior highlight tape.
