Steve Gleason is a lot of things to a lot of people, but to those with ALS and their loved ones he represents hope for a cure.
On Tuesday, Gleason was invited to Washington by Louisiana senator David Vitter to watch the State of the Union address and meet with various important figures in the field of health and medicine. Vitter recently introduced a new bill that would expand medicare funding to include power wheelchairs and speaking devices, like the ones Gleason uses, to those with advanced stages of diseases. He hoped that inviting Gleason would shine a light on the issue.
