Cougar safety Shalom Luani picked his third big accolade of the week on Wednesday, when he was named the Jim Thorpe player of the week. The Jim Thorpe award is given annually to the top defensive back in the country. They also hand out a weekly award to an outstanding performance in the secondary. Luani has not made their watch list yet, but that could change if he continues his outstanding play. He ended up with 11 tackles, two interceptions and a touchdown in the win over Oregon State.
Luani received the Pac-12 defensive player of the week award on Monday. Tuesday brought more acclaim with his addition to the Polynesian player of the year watch list. The Polynesian hall of fame starting handing out this award last year. The inauguaral winner was Heisman Trophy recipient Marcus Mariota. The award is handed out on December 8th.
Luani has been a revelation as a junior college transfer in his first year. I named a top five all-time junior college players at WSU earlier this year and it’s safe to say that Luani could near the top of the list by the time his career is over. He continues the tradition of great safeties at WSU, such as Lamont Thompson and Deonne Bucannon.
