Pac-12 week 5 recap

Week 5 is officially in the books, how did your team do this week?

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

It was not a good week to play at home last weekend with every home team dropping their game, except for Colorado who took on FCS opponent Nicholls State. Utah absolutely stunned Oregon by beating them by 42 in Autzen, Stanford rolled through Oregon State and Arizona failed to live up to the College GameDay hype with UCLA in town.

North

Team Conference Record Overall Record
California 2-0 5-0
Stanford 3-0 4-1
Oregon 1-1 3-2
Oregon State 0-1 2-2
Washington 0-1 2-2
Washington State 0-1 2-2

South

Utah 1-0 4-0
UCLA 1-1 4-1
USC 1-1 3-1
Arizona State 1-1 3-2
Colorado 0-1 3-2
Arizona 0-2 3-2

We had our first weekend of only conference play and it turned out just as you would have expected... Very much Pac-12 like.

Washington, Utah, Oregon State, and USC all had a bye this week.

Arizona State (3-2) @ #7 UCLA (3-1)  -  38-23

UCLA running back Paul Perkins has been electric all season long but was not able to bust free this weekend gaining 68 yards on 18 carries and scored once on a 1-yard touchdown. While Nate Starks finished with 23 yards on the ground himself, the Bruins offense finished with 62 total rushing yards. UCLA trailed by 6 with 5 minutes remaining in the game but was unable to do anything with that when the Sun Devils recorded a safety and a touchdown with under a minute remaining. Sun Devil quarterback Mike Bercovici finished going 27-44 for 273 yards, 2 touchdowns and 1 interception while Bruins quarterback Josh Rosin went 22-40 for 280 yards and also threw 2 touchdowns and an interception.

Final thought: UCLA came into this game a week after destroying Arizona but came up flat against an ASU team that didn't look all that great leading up to this game.

Arizona (3-2) @ #18 Stanford (4-1) -  17-55

A week after dominating Oregon State, the Cardinal quarterback did it again as he went 17/19 for 217 yards and 2 touchdowns in front of a running back committee that had 314 yards on the ground led by Christian McCaffrey who tallied 156 yards on 17 carries. Remound Wright had 29 yards on 10 carries with 2 touchdowns. Stanford held a 24 point lead heading into halftime which was then followed by a 21 point 3rd quarter. Arizona could not get anything going as they had to leave quarterback Anu Soloman in Tuscon due to a concussion. Jerrard Randall stepped in for him and went 15/28 for 178 yards and a touchdown.

Final thought: Stanford took a BIG step back with their loss to Northwestern but since has taken multiple steps forward while Arizona's season is on the verge of going down hill.

Washington State (2-2) @ #24 California (5-0) -  28-34

Washington State started out strong in this one but lost all momentum after California drove the field after a missed Cougar field goal which was then followed by a surprise onside kick which Cal recovered. It took Jared Goff 4 plays to find the endzone again and with all the momentum on their side they went for 2. The call was originally called incomplete but was reversed.  Both quarterbacks had great games as Goff went 33/45 for 390 yards, 4 touchdowns, and an interception while Luke Falk went 35/49 for 389 yards, 2 touchdowns, and an interception. Gabe Marks had another stellar game for the Cougars as he had a touchdown on 10 receptions for 141 yards. As expected, the running game was not a big factor in this game as the Cougars had 14 yards on 22 carries and the Bears had 79 yards on 30 carries.

Final thought: Nobody is giving California the credit they deserve while Washington State is going to have a hard time finding a win in the coming weeks.

Oregon (2-2) @ Colorado (2-2)  -  41-24

Oregon was embarrassed last week in front of their home crowd when Utah stomped on them. The Ducks were not going to allow Colorado the chance to give their fans something to watch. With Vernon Adams still not playing due to his hand injury, the Ducks went with Jeff Lockie as their starting quarterback. Lockie finished 8/11 for 54 yards and an interception while Taylor Alie came in in replacement of Lockie and went 4/9 for 83 yards and a touchdown. Running back Bralon Addison threw a 39 yard touchdown on a fake early in the game to regain momentum. Colorado quarterback Sefo Liufau went 25/42 for 231 yards while throwing a touchdown and an interception. The Ducks ran the ball freely all game as they had Royce Freeman finish with 163 yards and 2 touchdowns on 27 carries while Taj Griffin finished with 110 yards on 11 carries and 1 touchdown.

Final thought: Oregon looks very very beatable this year while Colorado is still not quite there.
