WSU uniform combos: Non-traditional combinations becoming more common

Since Mike Leach took over in 2012, "traditional" uniform combinations are becoming fewer and further between for Washington State.

Uniform combos are becoming a bigger topic of conversation the week before football games at virtually every school across the country. Since WSU's uniform redesign by Nike in 2011, my biased opinion is that they have some of the sharpest uniforms in the country. They finally got to a truer crimson and gray, getting away from colors closer to silver and red and the numerals/fonts are gorgeous.

Since the football team is announcing their weekly uniform pick on Twitter, it seemed to us and many Coug fans that the combos were getting less and less "traditional" (depending on your definition and era of Cougar football you remember) and things seemed to be getting more creative.

So ... have they? The answer to that seems to be "yeah, a little bit!"

Uniform Combo Record Times worn 2015 Times worn 2014 Times worn 2013 Times worn 2012
Crimson/White/Crimson 2-4 1 1 2 2
Crimson/White/White 2-3 0 0 3 2
Crimson/White/Anthracite 1-2 0 1 1 1
Crimson/Gray/Anthracite 0-1 0 0 0 1
Crimson/Anthracite/Anthracite 2-4 2 2 2 1
Crimson/Crimson/Gray 1-0 1 0 0 0
Gray/Crimson/Gray 4-5 1 2 2 4
Gray/Anthracite/Gray 1-1 0 1 1 0
Gray/White/Gray 1-1 0 1 1 0
White/Crimson/White 0-1 0 1 0 0
Crimson/Crimson/Crimson 1-4 2 1 1 1
White/White/White 2-2 2 2 0 0

The most striking difference between Mike Leach's first year and 2015 is the gigantic reduction in the gray/crimson/gray combo. Whether the team thinks it's getting some bad luck from the Portland State game wearing them or the players just like mixing things up more, I'm not sure. The non-traditional combos, like the all-white and anything involving anthracite is getting worn a lot more.

When it comes to win-loss record in a given combo though, the one-time combos of white/crimson/white and crimson/gray/anthracite are sitting at goose eggs but the all-crimson, despite the win over Oregon in Eugene, remains the most "bad luck" combo. The all-whites and crimson/white/white are the best record wise at .500 a piece.

As far as a personal favorite for me that's on this list, the gray/anthracite/gray is probably my favorite. I know I've complained about the inability to read the numbers on those jerseys but late in the season, once we move into the late fall, for whatever reason the combo in our header image really works for me.

We also did the season-to-season results for the combos. Yeah, this is way more info on uniform combos than you ever thought you'd need.
