Do you have a knack for writing, presenting an argument or writing in detail about current events, based on dynamic flow of information?
CougCenter is looking for candidates to contribute to the site, covering breaking WSU news and updating news stories via SB Nation's patented StoryStream technology. If you're a columnist with a unique, powerful voice looking to sound off about an WSU-related area of authority, we'd love to hear from you too. Even if you don't fit this mold (say you offer a world class design eye, next level Illustrator abilities, or have a background producing/editing professional audio or video), we should still talk.
Duties: Candidates are responsible for creating new StoryStreams covering breaking/evolving news, updating existing StoryStreams with new news about that story, writing posts based on pre-planned content, and scouring the internet for stories to write in support of the Washington State Cougars, Pac-12, college football, college basketball, recruiting, or Pullman-centric news happenings. Candidates will be coordinating with editors and supporting WSU through the publishing of news and the filing of pre-planned columns/features.
Background and qualifications: This is an entry-level position in sports media. Candidates with experience producing sports news content or sports news columns are preferred in either an intern, academic or professional capacity. A journalism or English degree (or degree in-progress) is preferred but not required. Strong knowledge of all sports and a demonstrated ability to write in an online environment are musts.
Our ideal candidate:
- Has strong knowledge about WSU, both current and historical.
- Possesses excellent writing skills.
- Has a nose for news, both in knowing what is important and identifying where to find it.
- Is able to write in line with and adhere to our best practices.
- Is able to write and publish quickly while remaining accurate.
- Is a self-starter who can work with minimal direction.
- Possesses solid communication skills.
- Is comfortable working in a virtual environment.
Hours: Schedules will vary based on the athletic calendar, need, and availability. Ideally you'll contribute a minimum of twice a week, but many of our writers do so more often.
Compensation: Several of our writers have gone on to receive compensation to work at CougCenter, as well as at our parent organization, SB Nation, over the years, but available positions are currently unpaid. Depending on your work, dedication and talent, there are always opportunities for talented writers with high enthusiasm and overall creativeness. And there are plenty of real world cases where volunteer contributors for SB Nation have parlayed their hard work and talent into full-time opportunities. The next could be you.
How to Apply: Candidates should send a description of qualifications and writing samples to cougcenter@gmail.com.
