The college baseball season may be winding down, but that doesn't mean the schedule is winding down for Washington State. In fact, they're in the middle of what might be the most hectic part of their schedule. Tuesdays game against Portland marks game 4 of a stretch that sees WSU playing 7 games in 9 days in 3 different stadiums. With Oregon in the rear view and Arizona State looming on the horizon, how would this team respond?
Pretty well, actually.
The Cougars defeated the Pilots 7-3 in front of 3,076 in Gesa Stadium in Pasco. Infielder Ian Sagdal was the hero of the day. He drove in 2 runs with a 3rd inning triple and was credited with a 3rd thanks to a 4 pitch, bases loaded walk in the 6th inning. Sagdal ended the night 1 for 1 with 3 walks. He was also very active on the base paths, especially in the 5th when Sagdal, following a leadoff walk, stole both 2nd and 3rd and scored on a PJ Jones double. Jack Strunc also had a nice game at the plate going 2 for 3 with a double and 2 runs scored.
Being in the middle of this irregular stretch, WSU gave the start to their bullpen. Reliever Sam Triece got his 4th start of the season and threw 2.1 innings of no-hit ball. The Cougars ended up using 6 pitchers, collectively they gave up 7 hits and only 1 earned run. Cole Doherty was tagged with the loss for Portland after giving up 6 hits and 4 earned runs in 4.1 innings.
The home stretch of games doesn't get any easier as the Cougs head to Tempe for the 17th ranked Sun Devils. The series starts on Thursday and all 3 games will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks. The Cougars will then return home and take on Stanford for their final series of the season, starting on May 24th.
