Cougar football disappointed last year, but even 2014's 3-9 team was a step up from anything Cougar fans saw in the Paul Wulff era.
Kevin Trahan from SB Nation looked at the 10 worst power conference teams since 2005 according to the stat F/+. Wulff's first team, the '08 Cougs were the 6th worst team in the last decade. It gets worse. The 2009 rendition of Washington State football was the worst power conference football team in the last 10 years. Their rankings for those seasons were 112th and 119th
Man, I for one am really happy that SB Nation took time to bring back these delightful memories. Nothing like a fun little jaunt down memory lane right? Its not like anybody around here was trying to block those memories away like that time they peed themselves in front of the whole class.
In both of those seasons they were ranked lower than teams that didn't win a game ('08 UW and '09 Western Kentucky). It did get better, but not nearly enough as WSU was ranked 95th and 98th in 2010 and 2011.
Teams ranked in the 90s, like the Cougs in Wulff's best years, might go 7-5 if they get some turnover luck and play in the Sun Belt. They also get blown out by power conference foes.
So while the 3-9 season sucked, the team still ranked 77th, and the year before they finished 53rd. Leach has this thing going in the right direction and the team will compete in the Pac-12. Bill Connelly had some cautious optimism about the upcoming season in his preview and I do too. This team has a shot to be decent and Leach is a big reason for that.
Don't cry because the Wulff years happened; smile because they're over.
