Calvin Green transitioning from wide receiver to defensive back

The sophomore's position change is just one of several tidbits of news to come out of Lewiston this week.

James Snook-USA TODAY Sports

It's been a crazy couple of days for the Washington State football program as fall camp is well underway in Lewiston, Idaho. Earlier this week we found out that Mike Leach and Co. are in the process of appealing wide receiver Kyrin Priester's eligibility, using what few know as the run-off waiver. Adding the former Clemson Tiger receiver to the team this year, as opposed to 2016, would make Pac-12 defensive coordinators lose their mind.

Friday, the Cougars got their quarterback for the 2016 class in Cody Brewer. The 6'6 Brewer hails from Corpus Christi, Texas and pledged crimson and gray after Washington State lost their original class of 2016 quarterback commit Ian Book to Notre Dame.

However, Brewer's commitment news came right about the same time when it was announced that Thomas Toki won't be enrolling at WSU until January, making him ineligible to play football this season for the Cougars. Toki had been absent from camp all week and today it was learned that he did not receive academic clearance to enroll at the university until spring semester.

Yet some of the most interesting news to come out of Lewiston was that sophomore receiver Calvin Green had arrived to practice, but not as a receiver. According to Jacob Thorpe of the Spokesman-Review, Green is no longer a route runner.

This isn't the first time the Cougars have turned a young receiver into a defensive back. They tried it both with Teondray Caldwell and Sebastian LaRue last season, which proved to be unsuccessful as both are no longer with the team. But Green's situation could be different. He played as a true freshman last season and finished with 13 receptions for 68 yards. Whether it be a temporary or permanent move, it'll be interesting to see how quickly Green can learn a new position and how that will affect how much playing time with just three weeks to go until kickoff against Portland State.

21 days, people!
