WSU bowl projections: Huskies’ slip against USC pushes Cougs back to Holiday Bowl

Most bowl projections now have the Cougs in the Holiday Bowl without UW in the College Football Playoff.

NCAA Football: California at Washington State James Snook-USA TODAY Sports

The Washington State Cougars are in first place, all by themselves, in the Pac-12 North. A combination of their big win over the Cal Golden Bears and No. 15 USC’s upset of the No. 7 Washington Huskies means you get this (which has still not gotten old to look at):

If you’re a Cougar fan who wants to see WSU in the Rose Bowl this season (read: everyone), this weekend’s results were a mix of good and bad. Good because WSU still has a very good chance to go to Pasadena. Bad because UW’s loss all but assured they won’t be in the College Football Playoff which would’ve left the Rose Bowl open for the conference’s second best team and WSU’s bowl projections have gotten decidedly worse. The Cougs had a little room for error had UW kept winning but assuming the Huskies do beat ASU next week, WSU’s going to have to run the table against at least two top-15 teams. Bowl prognosticators assume the Huskies will win out so instead of being projected to spend the holidays in southern Texas, they now believe we’ll all be watching a game in a place Ron Burgundy once translated VERY incorrectly.

Before we get to that though, a reminder of the Pac-12’s bowl tie-ins and the dates for them (times are Pacific).

SB Nation: Holiday Bowl

Backwards from the Alamo Bowl according to the mothership to face the Minnesota Golden Gophers. I’m gunna be a tad unhappy if the reward for this season is playing a friggin’ Gophers.

CBS: Holiday Bowl

Jerry Palm finally moved the Cougs off the Foster Farms Bowl in what strikes me as an odd week to do it. Same opponent as above, the Golden Gophers.

Campus Insiders: Holiday Bowl

Everyone is all aboard the San Diego train as Campus Insiders projects WSU to play the Northwestern Wildcats.

College Football News: Alamo Bowl

I’m favoring this if only for how drunk on offense a game between Oklahoma State and WSU would be.

Sporting News: Alamo Bowl

Sporting News still thinks UW works their way into the CFP so they slot WSU for the Alamo Bowl against West Virginia.

Fox Sports: Rose Bowl

This is an interesting one with Stewart Mandel giving the Huskies an at-large bid to the Cotton Bowl, thusly opening the Rose Bowl slot for the Cougs to play Penn State. I know more than a few Dawg fans who would be ... less than pleased ... with this scenario.

NBC’s College Football Talk: Foster Farms Bowl

This is as far down the bowl list as you’ll see WSU this week. It’s a mirror of Jerry Palm’s prediction from many weeks before now, a game with the Indiana Hoosiers.

Athlon Sports: Holiday Bowl

Our first check in with Athlon this year and they like the Cougs to play the Iowa Hawkeyes in San Diego.

Heavy: Holiday Bowl

I’m assuming the name of this site isn’t a shot at my weight but they like WSU to play the Wisconsin Badgers in this one. Seems a long way for Wiscy to fall though.

We’ll add more as the projections are released this week.
