Pac-12 Football odds and picks: The Gamble-Tron, Week 12

Welcome back. I don’t know why it took this long, but I finally realized that if any of you had decided to fade me since the season started, you’d be up about $4,000 by now. It appears I should have gone full Costanza from the start. But alas, I didn’t, and here we are. So hopefully you at least figured it out somewhere along the way and made a little pretend money.

On we venture into the twelfth week of what has turned out to be a heckuva season on the field, and a not-so-heckuva season around here. We’re getting a little sick and tired of driving around with the windows down all the time. Opening the doors and windows in the house? BORING. So we’re headed west, set to witness the Cougs play two consecutive games (with a trip back to the Southeast in between). Hopefully the fresh mountain air wakes up the part of the brain that is responsible for point spreads.

Why I’m a genius: I finally bet more than the norm on a team that covered! Granted, UCLA made it really interesting, needing a pick six to seal it. But seal it they did. How about those Trojans??!! Admittedly, the game didn’t go down like I foresaw, but it matters not. Finally, I probably shouldn’t be surprised every time Oregon plays another terrible game. But surprised I always am. Luckily, Stanford was the pick.

Why I’m an idiot: Thursday was a bummer for the first time in a while. ASU looked great, for a quarter. Then they looked like they do when they’re on the road. Can’t get on the right side of the Cougs, no matter what I do. I guess it was too much to ask that Cal try on Saturday. (not that I’m actually upset). Arizona was close, for about 10 minutes. Like Oregon, I am amazed at how they’ve cratered. I’ve been watching Mizzou get murdered for weeks. I finally got on board, and they win and cover. Of course.

Oregon (+14/-110) at Utah (-14/-110): Christian McCaffrey went bananas on the Oregon “defense” last Saturday. Hell, even Keller Chryst didn’t suck. That’s progress! I expect Joe Williams to do much of the same damage to Oregon. It might get so ugly that Troy Williams completes 50% of his passes.

The Pick: $330 on Utah

WSU (+4.5/-110) at Colorado (-4.5/-110): I haven’t picked the Cougs correctly since Oregon and that was because Tails never fails. So I’m going to apologize in advance. On the other hand, my kids still haven’t had their hair cut since the day before the Idaho game, and I’ve been able to hold off the Mrs. for over two weeks now. I’ll admit they look like bums. I’ll also admit that anyone who screws with a streak is dead to me.

The Pick: $110 on WSU

Stanford (-10.5/-110) at Cal (+10.5/-110): Stanford is starting to get rolling again. Granted, it doesn’t hurt that they’ve played the Oregon speedbumps the last two weeks, but the defense is more healthy, and the offensive line is rounding into form. Cal? Well, Cal is about to start holding open campus tryouts for defensive backs. Davis Webb is hurting, and he’s Cal’s only hope.

The Pick: $220 on Stanford

ASU (+27/-110) at Washinton (-27/-110): I plan to settle in somewhere Saturday evening, hopefully after a Cougar win, to watch this game. I really really really want ASU to win. ASU is gonna get destroyed.

The Pick: $110 on Washinton

Arizona (+6.5/-110) at OSU (-6.5/-110): Yuck

The Pick: $110 on OSU while holding my nose and looking the other way.

USC (-10.5/-110) at UCLA (+10.5/-110): Talk about a tale of two quarterbacks. Josh Rosen was one of the Pac-12’s brightest stars when 2016 began. Now he’s just some skeezy-looking dude with a mustache. Sam Darnold began the year on the bench, and I’m convinced it’s because Clay Helton didn’t want Alabama to ruin him. Now he’s playing really well. I actually like both teams for different reasons. Let’s go with the team on its way up.

The Pick: $110 on USC

Navy (-7/-110) at East Carolina (+7/-110): East Carolina has fallen off a cliff. Navy is still Navy. That is to say, they’re pretty damn good.

The Pick: $440 on the Middies

Arkansas (+2/-110) at Mississippi State (-2/-110): Both teams got killed by the two best teams in the SEC West last weekend. Arkansas didn’t get killed as badly. Good enough!

The Pick: $110 Woo Pig Sooie
