Gleason, the documentary that chronicled former WSU star Steve Gleason’s battle with ALS, has been named one of the top 5 docs of the year by the National Board of Review.
This is a huge honor for the film as the National Board of Review has been honoring films for over 107 years with a select group of film aficionados viewing over 250 movies and conducting interviews with the filmmakers. A stamp of approval from the Board can often lead films to success at the Oscars. A film on their list immediately is granted creditability with the best films of the year. An example of this from last year was when Mad Max: Fury Road went from being considered a summer blockbuster to showing up on the list of the top movies of the year which helped lead to ten Oscar nominations.
The prognosis for Gleason obtaining a nomination for film’s top honor is looking good so far. Indiewire has it listed as one of their "contenders". Awardscircuit.com (a website dedicated to predicting these sorts of things) has the former Cougar’s film as one of the five nominees. Here is what British newspaper The Guardian had to say about Gleason’s chances.
The nominations will be announced on January 24th 2017.
Let’s keep our fingers crossed that this amazing film will receive the recognition it deserves in front of a worldwide audience. And if it is still playing in a theater near you, I highly recommend checking it out if you haven’t already. Amazing flick.
