The 2016 college baseball season is well underway and the Cougars did not get off to the hot start that they were hoping for. The Cougars were outscored in their first two games 16-3 by the Texas State Bobcats but kept game 3 close losing 7-6.
Monday was a different story for the team, as the Cougs edged out their first win of the season in extra innings, 9-8. The Bobcats went into the 9th inning with a 7-5 lead, but the Cougars were able to take advantage of some sloppy play.
Derek Chapman led off the 9th with a walk and scored on a Cameron Frost double to cut the deficit to one. Patrick McGrath fouled out and Shane Matheny grounded out but advanced Frost to third. With two outs, the Bobcats threw a wild pitch that allowed Frost to score from third and tie the game up. Neither team was able to do anything with the rest of regulation.
Stefan Van Horn led things off for the Cougars in the 10th inning with a home run to left field -- his second in as many games. Jack Strunc doubled to left field on a full count and later scored on a Chapman fly out.
The Bobcats started out the 10th inning with a double to left field by Granger Studdard who was later scored in by Tanner Hill on a single up the middle. The Bobcats got a runner on second but couldn't get him any closer to home.
After struggling in their first three games, the Cougars finally got head coach Marty Lees his first win at Washington State. The Cougars will remain in the state of Texas for four more games this upcoming weekend before their home opener against Utah Valley on March 3rd for a four-game series.
