Washington State, clearly looking to add size at the receiver position in this class, quickly set its sights on one of the top receivers in Southern California, and nearly a year after extending an offer to the 6-foot-4, 202-pounder, he's a Coug.
Dezmon Patmon, a three-star wideout out of San Diego, Calif., officially signed his letter of intent Wednesday, adding yet another lengthy receiver to the Cougars' 2016 haul. He's the fourth San Diego-area prospect signed or committed in the 2016 class, joining defensive end Danny Bender and linebackers Jihad Woods and Mason Vinyard.
Following an official visit in mid-December, Patmon took a few days to ponder his future before announcing his intention of playing for the Cougars on a local news station. He committed to WSU and area recruiter Alex Grinch over offers from California, Colorado, Boise State, Colorado State and others.
Patmon is a consensus three-star prospect, according to the four major recruiting services. Scout.com ranks Patmon the No. 79 overall receiver in the 2016 class and the No. 12 receiver in California. He's the No. 116 overall prospect in California, according to ESPN.
As a senior, Patmon, who projects as an X-receiver in the Air Raid, finished with 669 yards and five touchdowns, though he hauled in 43 catches for 873 yards and 14 scores as a junior. Showing off his versatility, Patmon also excelled at safety for two seasons.
The Patrick Henry High standout is one of the biggest receivers in the state and he plays that way. Overall, he's a highly sought recruit that does a lot of things well, and he'll have an opportunity to immediately compete for snaps.
Scouting report
Extremely promising talent. Not quite as polished a runner yet, but extremely athletic with solid breakaway speed. A majority of his highlights are contested 50/50 balls where he bailed the QB out by coming down with it. Used primarily as a vertical route guy, also showed some talent as a ball carrier in traffic. Didn't have many easy catches in his highlight, Patmon has some great hands and a real knack for winning a body position fight for the ball in the air. He has great size to project outside at X.
