After dropping the series opener against Utah Valley 8-0, WSU showed up yesterday in a big way. Getting the victory in the second game between the two teams, 10-1.
Cougar pitchers Ryan Ward and Ryan Walker were lights out, striking out 14 combined batters. And the offense dominated, registering 17 hits.
WSU might have something special in Ryan Walker. The sophomore pitcher started catching fire towards the end of last season and some of that mojo has carried over. So far this season Walker has been great, in relief against Houston Baptist he threw five scoreless innings and yesterday he threw six strikeouts on his way to four scoreless innings.
The Cougar offense has flashed this type of firepower before, when they put up 16 hits against Prairie View A&M. Derek Chapman led the way going 4-for-4 accounting for two runs and a RBI. But for the most part the offensive explosion came from the entire line-up. Six Cougars had multiple hit games, including Trek Stemp who extended his hitting streak to 10 games.
The bats were alive all day, as WSU put runs on the board in the first, third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings. With the Wolverines playing catch-up all day, Ward and Walker picked them apart. Hopefully the Cougars can take some momentum from this game and keep their bats productive.
The Cougars will continue their home stand at Bailey-Brayton Field today against the Wolverines. First pitch is at 4 p.m. as WSU looks to take the advantage in the series.
