The Cougs are struggling on the diamond this year. Heading into a big weekend series with 7th ranked Oregon State, WSU is 10-19 on the season and 3-9 in Pac-12 play, sitting in dead last in the Pac-12
But there is good news this season for Cougar baseball fans.
Last season, WSU alum Adam Conley made his MLB debut and started 11 games for the Marlins. He entered Spring Training this season as a long shot to make Miami's rotation, but after a solid camp, he won the team's 3rd spot in the rotation. Here's what SB Nation's Marlins blog Fish Stripes had to say about the news when it came down at the end of March:
Over 9.2 innings this spring, Conley pitched to a 1.86 ERA. While he did have success in his spring outings, Conley's performance as the 2015 campaign ended likely factored into the Marlins' decision.
Over 67.0 innings, Conley pitched to a 3.76 ERA and 3.81 FIP. Those numbers should not change much this season.
Conley made his 2016 debut last week in Washington. He ended that game with a 27.00 ERA... But that wasn't entirely his fault.
The Fish gave him a 3 run lead in the top of the 1st, but he gave up a bases loaded triple in the bottom of the frame to tie it up. He got out of the 1st, but a nearly 90 minute rain delay halted the game, and Miami decided to give Conley the hook following the long lay off.
As the only Coug on an opening day roster, Conley will ll have another shot to represent the crimson and gray tonight as the Marlins look to sweep the Mets at home. First pitch is set for 4 o'clock PT.
