The Washington State Cougars seek to bounce back from a second-straight opening season loss to an FCS team when they travel to face the Boise State Broncos on the blue turf of Albertsons Stadium in Boise on Saturday night. The Broncos had far less trouble in moving to 1-0 on the year, taking down Louisiana-Lafeyette, 45-10, on the road.

WSU went on to win nine games in 2015 after falling to Portland State to begin the campaign. Coug fans are hoping that history can repeat itself after another surprising defeat to Eastern Washington. In that game, it was the Cougars defense that disappointed the most, with poor tackling in the defensive backfield leading to extended drives and big plays. Was that the WSU defense that should be expected the rest of the season?

Some of those back-end issues will be somewhat ameliorated by the return of top safety Shalom Luani.

On the offensive side, Luke Falk and company were surely in part to blame in the Eastern loss after a lackluster second half allowed the Eagles to climb to an insurmountable two-score lead. Falk seemed timid after throwing a late-first half interception. He’ll need to improve in order to move the ball against the Boise State defense.
