You probably know that WSU's basketball rivalry with Idaho is the longest running series west of the Mississippi (and the longest that doesn't involve the Ivy League), but did you know that the Cougs are also involved in another top 10 rivalry matchup on the hardwood?
Tonight, the Cougars will met the Oregon State Beaver for the 108th consecutive season. With their first meeting in 1909, the series is the 3rd oldest continuous game west of the Mississippi (and the 3rd longest that doesn't involve the Ivy League). Only Baylor vs. Texas stands in between the two long running Cougar rivalries.
One of the big differences between the Idaho series and the OSU series is the overall record. WSU holds a 163-109 edge over the Vandals, but the Beavers are 45 games over .500 against the Cougs holding at 169-104 record in the rivalry.
As mentioned earlier, the first meeting of the series was in 1909 when the Emmett Angell led Beavs topped the J. Fred Bohler led Cougars 30-16 in Corvallis. It was one of just three losses on the season for the Cougs in Bohler's second season as coach. He would spend 18 years as the head man in Pullman.
Not surprisingly, Oregon State has dominated the series recently. The Beavers have won six straight over the Cougars. But, in a good omen, Washington State's last win in the series came in the Spokane Arena, the site of tonight's matchup.
Tip off is set for 8 o'clock tonight in Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena with TV coverage on the Pac-12 Networks.
