Woods, Powell named Pac-12 Players of the Week

The Cougs dominate the weekly conference awards following their 30-27 win over USC.

The glow from the Washington State Cougars win over USC on Friday continues to shine brighter with the announcement of the conference’s players of the week. The Pac-12 named redshirt freshman linebacker Jahad Woods the Defensive Player of the Week and handed senior kicker Erik Powell their Special Teams Player of the Week honor.

Woods, besides the strip sack of Sam Darnold on the Trojans’ final drive that sealed the game for the Cougs, racked up a game high nine tackles. When Peyton Pelluer went down against the Oregon State Beavers, we were all worried about who would fill for the experienced, skilled senior. Through two starts, Woods has shown himself as more than capable of doing just that. Making a play that will live in the lore of WSU football history helps too.

What a turn around for Erik Powell, as well. After a woeful start to last season, Powell has only missed once through five games (a blocked kick) and was a perfect 3-for-3 against USC, including the game winner late in the fourth quarter.

The awards are firsts for both players. Congrats to Jahad and Erik!
