HCA: Washington State fined $25k for rushing the field after USC upset

The fine was announced on Monday

NCAA Football: Southern California at Washington State James Snook-USA TODAY Sports

In the process of upsetting then #5 USC last Friday night, Washington State fans rushed the field before the clock could even hit 0:00. On Monday, it was announced that the University would receive a $25,000 fine for rushing the field.

The Pac-12 announced last year that the school that rushes the field will be given a $25,000 fine the first time, $50,000 for the second, and $100,000 for the third time and on. This is a fine that can be handed down in both football and basketball as the conference wants to ensure safety.

This is not the first time Cougar fans have rushed the field this month however. Three weeks ago after beating Boise State in triple-overtime, fans rushed the field after the game-winning touchdown was announced. There was no fine handed down after that game, but it makes sense that that the conference would fine the school this week with the circumstances.

This fine was put in place to protect both the athlete and the fan. On Friday night while rushing the field a fan collided hard with a USC player. While storming the field is an experience unlike many others, safety is the main concern for both the fan and the athlete.

The Cougars secured their biggest win in 15 years and are 5-0 for the first time since 2001. With two more home games remaining this year it is unlikely that we will see the possibility for a second fine, but if the Cougars can keep winning, anything is possible with this team.
