We're used to football games kicking off late, but not as late as the Washington State Cougars' basketball team will tip off tonight. The Cougs meet the San Diego Aztecs at 9 p.m. PST in the championship game of the Wooden Legacy Tournament.
How did they get here?
The Cougs started the eight-team tournament with a comeback win over Saint Joseph's on Thursday. They followed that up with an 84-79 win over the no. 21 Saint Mary's Gaels in which the final score wasn't the proper indication of how the game went. The Gaels needed a comeback to even get that close.
Malachi Flynn had 26 points to lead the way for the Cougs.
The Aztecs thumped Sacramento State on Thursday and then beat the Georgia Bulldogs 75-68 to advance to tonight's game.
The Cougs have been the comeback kids a number of times so far in the young season. WSU already has comeback wins in the regular season over Texas Southern, Seattle University and Saint Joseph's. It's not the ideal way to play, but 5-0 is still 5-0.
The Cougs will look for their first tournament championship since the 2009 Great Alaska Shootout. They came close in 2010, losing in the finals of the Diamond Head Classic.
The game can be seen on ESPN or WatchESPN.
