The Washington State Cougars have started 6-0 and this past weekend won the Wooden Legacy tournament with a 93-86 victory over San Diego State. On Monday, the weekly basketball AP poll was released and the Cougars found themselves with enough votes (25) to be ranked 31st. It’s their first time receiving votes since January 2011.

The 25 votes they received puts them ahead of Texas (22) and behind Arizona (31); UCLA (56) was the other Pac-12 school to receive votes but not be ranked in the top 25. USC and Arizona State are the only conference teams to be ranked in the top 25 at 14 and 20, respectively.

NBC Sports also named the Cougars their Team of the Week and said "they are now someone that we need to pay attention to" in regards to them being a tournament team.

The Cougars’ surprising start to the season includes wins against Saint Joseph’s, then-21st ranked Saint Mary's, and most recently San Diego State. Their win on Sunday marked the Cougars’ first tournament title since 2009 when they won the Great Alaska Shootout.

Of their six wins this season, three have been against teams inside of Ken Pomeroy's top-100. The three this season matches their total from the previous two seasons combined.

The Cougars will pick things back up on Saturday when they host UC Davis in Beasley Coliseum at noon. They will then head across the border to face Idaho on December 6 at 7:00 p.m.
