It wouldn't be Christmas without a story involving a Grinch, right?
Not that Grinch. Alex Grinch, the—for now—defensive coordinator for Washington State. That Grinch is much more likable than the other Grinch, for the record.
Bucknuts is reporting that Grinch will be taking a position on Urban Meyer's staff at Ohio State. Grinch is originally from Grove City, Ohio.
Grinch is expected to be Ohio State's 10th on-field assistant. The NCAA will allow schools to have 10 on-field assistants starting Jan. 9. So, perhaps that's when he'll officially be hired.
This shouldn't come as a surprise. Grinch has been a hot commodity this season and multiple schools have reportedly been interested. Grinch, as you know, took a maligned defense and turned it into the #SpeedD.
The WSU defense ranked no. 99 in total defense in 2014, the season prior to Grinch's arrival. Since then?
- 2015: no. 84
- 2016: no. 62
- 2017: no. 15
Grinch's defense pitched two shutouts in 2017, too.

His players like him, and Parker Henry even said the 14 spring practices in 2015 (Grinch's first spring) were the hardest he's ever had. The Mike Leach coaching tree is sure to grow with Grinch charting a new path.
I'm sure fans will be bummed, which is fine. I'd love to keep Grinch in Pullman but let's be real: He's a young guy with a young family and he's a really good coach. We can't expect up-and-coming coaches like Grinch to stay forever, simply put.
Plus, he's heading home. Remember: we always find our way back home.
