The award goes to the best walk-on in college football

NCAA Football: Washington State at Arizona Casey Sapio-USA TODAY Sports

After being the runner-up behind Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield for the past two years, Luke Falk finally got his time at the podium on Monday when it was announced he had won the 2017 Burlsworth trophy. The award is given out yearly to college football’s best former walk-on player. Falk finished ahead of Mayfield, Memphis receiver Anthony Miller, and Troy Fumagalli who is the tight end at Wisconsin.

With the bowl game still remaining for the Cougars, Falk has thrown for 3,593 yards and 30 touchdowns while throwing 13 interceptions this season. With the exception of the Boise State game in which he was benched, Falk led the Cougars to a 6-0 start that included a win over then ranked #5 USC.

Falk thanked special teams coach Eric Mele in his acceptance speech saying “thanks for giving me a shot and taking a chance on a kid from Logan, Utah” he added “it’s been fun to be able to do what we’ve done.” Mele was tasked by Mike Leach to find the best walk-on quarterback he could. He found the jackpot with a guy that now owns every major Pac-12 passing record.

The Burlsworth Trophy is named after former Arkansas Razorback lineman, Brandon Burlsworth. A few weeks after being taken in the third round of the 1999 NFL Draft he was involved in a car accident and died at the age of 22. Burlsworth joined the Razorbacks as a walk on and left an All-American and two time All-SEC member.

Luke Falk and the Cougars will look to cap off their season December 28th against Michigan State in the Holiday Bowl.
