WSU football recruiting: Texas linebacker Tyree Wilson verbally commits to Wazzu

The 6-foot-4, 224-pounder is the second verbal commit for Washington State in the 2018 recruiting cycle.

Tyree Wilson, an outside linebacker from New London, Texas, verbally committed to Washington State on Tuesday night, announcing his commitment on Twitter, of course.

The 6-foot-4, 224-pounder also held an offer from Louisiana-Lafayette, though coming from West Rusk High School, a small, 3A school east of Dallas, a slow recruitment — especially this early in the cycle — is usually expected. Anyway, now he’s a Coug.

Wilson, an all-district selection as a junior, tallied 74 tackles, 13 of which went for a loss, and forced two fumbles. He’s raw, but definitely fits the ‘Speed D’ mold you’ve heard so much about.

24/7 Sports gives Wilson three-stars and ranks him the No. 46 weakside defensive end in the country. It appears Roy Manning was the primary recruiter for Wilson.

It’s super early, so finding a bunch of words to fill this space on a recruit is hard to do. Tyree looks like a very good football player and he’ll more than likely receive a bunch of offers between now and signing day, and WSU landing a commit from Texas is rare!

The last prospect to sign with WSU from the Lone Star State was Kirkland Parker out of Blinn College, so that hardly counts because junior college recruiting is different, OK? Before that, Darius Lemora and Charleston White signed in the 2013 class. That was awhile ago and both of them no longer play football for the Washington State Cougars.

According to Scout.com, WSU has extended 94 offers to 2018 prospects, seven of whom list Texas as their home state. WSU is smart to recruit Texas because Texas football is good.

TEXAS!

Anyway, Manning has now landed 100 percent of the verbal commitments in the 2018 class. Victor Terry, rated four-stars by a couple recruiting services, is another outside linebacker committed to WSU in this class.

There are no other current verbal commits, but WSU likely hopes to change that between now and next February. April is usually a good recruiting month for WSU, so hold on to your butts.
