Conference basketball tournaments look like they would be really fun events. You can go to a cool city, enjoy everything it has to offer for a few days while cheering your team on in a couple of games.
Cougar fans have never really had that experience.
Tonight, when the Cougs take the floor in the new T-Mobile Arena, they'll look to break an eight game losing streak. Washington State hasn't won a game at the conference's postseason showcase since 2009 when Tony Bennett topped Ernie Kent and the Oregon Ducks 62-40.
Recently, things have been ugly for WSU in the tournament (They've lost their last two games by a combined total of 49 points) but it wasn't that way in the beginning of the streak. Three of their first five losses came by just two points.
But let's look back even further into the woes of Washington State in the Pac-12 Tournament. During the first iteration of the event, from 1987-1990, WSU had a record of 2-4. The current version of the tournament, which has run since 2004 has been even less kind. In those 12 years, Washington State won just three times, once a year between 2007 and 2009 (which seemed to be pretty good years for the Cougs). That brings their record to just 5-17.
But the most concern stat out of those five wins: There has only been one upset win for the Cougs. That came back in the 2nd ever Pac-10 Tournament in 1988 when a 6th seeded Washington State upset a 3rd seeded UCLA team.
So, to conclude, things haven't gone well for Washington State in the conference tournament. But today is a new day and the Cougs will look to break the streak and make it to a matchup with Arizona in the quarterfinals with a win over Colorado. Tip off is set for 6 o'clock and you can watch on the Pac-12 Network.
And, if this article turned you off on the idea of spending your night watching the Cougs, I have have two words that may change your mind: "Bill Walton".
That will make up for years of futility by itself.
