Ernie Kent has reportedly zeroed in on who he wants to fill one of his two open assistant spots. Per Cougfan.com, Garfield (Seattle) head coach Ed Haskins has been offered the job, but has not yet made a decision. The hiring of Haskins would seem to be a perfect fit for the Cougars as he brings both a successful track record as a coach and excellent Seattle recruiting connections.
Two of Haskins players this year were top 100 recruits who signed with Washington before the firing of Lorenzo Romar. Deajon Davis received a release from his letter of intent and has announced he plans to sign with Stanford. Fellow recruit Jaylen Nowell has not made his intentions known as of yet. If Haskins was to be hired, that could possibly sway these two into coming to the Palouse. Junior J’Rann Brooks is also a highly touted recruit out of Garfield for 2018.
Haskins played as walk-on for Kelvin Sampson in 1992-93 before graduating from EWU. He has been a part of 5 state championships as an assistant at Rainier Beach and as the head man at Garfield. This could be quite the coup for the Cougars if Haskins says yes. No word on any other candidates that Ernie is considering for the two open spots.
