Washington State Head Coach Ernie Kent announced on Monday that Elwyn McRoy will join the Cougars staff as the Recruiting Coordinator. McRoy has spent the past two years at Coppin State University where he was an assistant.
McRoy has earned a name for himself as he has spent the past 20 years around college basketball including stints at Georgia Southern, Arkansas State, and Iowa State. During his time around the basketball world, McRoy was named a top-10 Junior College Recruiter by the Basketball Times and was also named as a top-25 mid-major assistant coach by College Insider.
Kent was not the only one to be giving praise on Monday as McRoy said, “Coach Kent is a legend, I feel honored to be able to work with a man who’s been to the Elite Eight twice, and who’s mentored so many young men in college basketball.” McRoy also went on to say how excited he is to be joining the coaching staff and believes it is a great fit for himself and for the Cougars.
This is not the first recruiting based move Kent has made this off-season as he has also hired Ed Haskins out of Garfield High School. Haskins has built himself a reputation and knows his way around high school basketball in the Seattle area. Both Haskins and McRoy bring an ability to recruit young talented basketball players to Washington State. Kent also has brought in former Cougar standout, Bennie Seltzer this off-season
