Another day, another Cougar football player on a preseason award watch list.
Receiver Tavares Martin Jr. and linebacker Peyton Pelleur are the latest Cougs to find themselves in award contention.
Martin Jr. was one of 46 players named to the Biletnikoff Award watchlist, given to the top receiver in college football. Last season, despite playing behind 2015 Biletnikoff semifinalist Gabe Marks, Martin finished the season with 64 receptions (6th most in the Pac-12) and 728 yards (8th most in the Pac-12).
The rising junior joins four fellow Pac-12 receivers on the list including Cal’s Demetris Robertson, Washington’s Dante Pettis and Colorado’s Shay Fields and Devin Ross.
Linebacker Peyton Pelleur was also added to an award watch list on Tuesday, but this one was slightly less exclusive. The senior was one of 109 players in contention for the Wuerffel Trophy. The award, named after former Florida quarterback Danny Wuerffel, honors the player “that best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.”
Pelleur is a three-time Pac-12 all-academic selection - twice named to the first team. On the field, the senior was named honorable mention all-conference last season after leading the Cougs with 93 tackles, the 4th best mark in the Pac-12. WSU release also says that Pelleur has been involved in numerous community service projects in the WSU community.
Both awards will announce their semifinalists in early November before announcing their 2017 winners at the beginning of December.
