On the same day Gardner Minshew II found out he was snubbed out of being a Heisman finalist, the Washington State quarterback received a phone call from Johnny Unitas Jr. congratulating him on winning the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award. Minshew was chosen for this award over Will Grier (West Virginia), Drew Lock (Missouri), McKenzie Milton (UCF), and Shea Patterson (Michigan) and is the first Cougar quarterback to win the in the short history of the award.
“You can throw that apple like my father did” says Unitas Jr. in congratulating him in receiving the award that is given yearly to the senior or fourth-year junior quarterback that shows the best scholastic and athletic achievement and who shows great character.

Minshew has thrown for 4,477 yards and 36 touchdowns this year and is just 238 yards from being the Pac-12 single season record holder for passing yards. He already holds the Cougars single game passing touchdown record when he threw for seven touchdowns against Arizona . To top off his incredible season stats he has led the Cougars to their first 10-win season in 16 years and has a chance to lead them to their first ever 11 win season.
In order to rack up the stats that he has, he had to have six 400-yard games and lead the Cougars to four comeback victories on the season. He also leads the Nation in passing yards per game (373.1), completions (433), attempts (613), and total yards per game (381.7).
Minshew is also a finalist for the Walter Camp Player of the Year and Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award.
