After throwing Washington State’s first solo 9-inning no-hitter since 1976, Scotty Sunitsch was named the Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week on Monday. This is Washington State’s first conference solo award since 2016 and the first pitcher of the week since 2015.
In Sundays game against Oregon, Sunitsch had 9 strikeouts while walking two and hitting two batters on just 95 pitches in the series finale in which the Cougars won 7-0. The no-hitter was a good ending to a rough series after they dropped the first two games of the series in Eugene 2-1 and 4-2.
The senior from Federal Way has had a great season so far as he has a 3-1 record and 30 strikeouts on 41.2 innings. The lefty has made 78 appearances in his career and is tied for 3rd most in Cougar history; 11 behind the most in school history. He was also apart of the Cougars four-pitcher no-hitter against Stephen F. Austin last season.
UCLA’s Chase Strumpf was named the Pac-12 player of the week while the Cougars Robert Teel was also nominated.
Washington State will come back home for a three game series against California starting Friday before heading up to Spokane to take on Gonzaga next Tuesday.
