Two weeks after Scotty Sunitsch threw a no-hitter and earned the Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week honor, Washington State junior right hander Parker McFadden earned the same award. On Sunday the Cougars threw their second no-hitter of the season; this time four pitchers combined to not allow a single hit from Santa Clara in their 5-0 win that capped their sweep.
In his first start since 2016, McFadden threw five innings striking out four, walking two, and hit one batter. He combined with A.J. Block, Collin Maier, and Ryan Walker who collectively struck out another five and walked two more. This is the second time in the last calendar year that the Cougars have been able to throw a combined no-hitter as four others threw one last May against Stephen F. Austin.
This is the first time since 1976 that the Cougars have been able to throw two no-hitters in a single season. It is the fourth no-hitter in the conference this year which ties for the most the conference has been able to post in a single season.
McFadden also appeared in the Cougars 7-4 loss to Gonzaga last Tuesday where he threw for 1.1 innings and struck out three. Sunday was his 10th appearance this season and has a team low 1.46 ERA on the season.
Senior outfielder Blake Clanton was also named as honorable mention for player of the week after going 6-12 with five doubles and bringing in four runners in the series.
The Cougars pick up again Wednesday in Seattle when they take on Seattle U, then will presumably stick around the west side to take on the University of Washington in a three game series starting Friday.
