HCA: Jason Hanson named to College Football Hall of Fame ballot

This is Hanson’s first year on the ballot

JASON HANSON COUGARS

Former Washington State kicker Jason Hanson was named to the College Football Hall of Fame ballot on Monday. He joins 15 other Pac-12 names on the list and is the only Cougar to be named. After being named to the WSU Hall of Fame in 2001 he was named to the Detroit Lions Ring of Honor in 2013.

The former walk-on holds many school, conference, and NCAA records including: 57.1 % of field goals from 50 yards or longer (conference), most field goals from 40 yards (39) and 50 yards (20) or more (NCAA), most points (328), longest field goal (62), field goals (63), and PATs (139) are all school records.

While at Washington State he was a two time First-Team All-American including his 1989 season where he became the first Cougar to be named a unanimous All-American. That title stood until 2017 when Cody O’Connell joined him. He was also named an All-American as a punter twice.

In 1992, Hanson was selected in the second round of the NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions where he had a incredible 21-year career before retiring in 2013.

Former Cougar coach Dennis Erickson was also named to the ballot. Erickson coached the Cougars for two seasons and finished with 12-10-1 record and an Aloha Bowl victory in his final season.

Hanson and Erickson join fellow Pac-12 athletes and coaches David Fulcher (ASU), Tony Gonzales (Cal), Jess Lewis (OSU), Ed McCaffrey (Stanford), Cade McNown (UCLA), Ken Norton Jr. (UCLA), Carson Palmer (USC), Jake Plummer (ASU), Troy Polamalu (USC), Ron Rivera (Cal), Rashaan Salaam (Colorado), Dennis Thurman (USC), Michael Westbrook (Colorado), and Darryl Rogers (ASU coach)

The final list of Hall of Fame members will be announced January 7, 2019. They will then be inducted in December of 2019.
