It’s Cougar Football Saturday, friends. Your Washington State Cougars welcome a team that plays in a high school stadium for an evening tilt. Let’s get it off our chests: The last time these two teams played was a major bummer. Let’s hope it never happens again.
Moving on to today’s game.....
Despite being an FCS team, Eastern boasts the best offense WSU will have faced so far this season. The season is young and these stats can be wildly misleading, but I’ll have you know that WSU’s total defense ranks third in the nation, so that’s good. The opponents haven’t offered much yet, and it’s odd to say that WSU’s first big test on defense will come against an FCS team, but here we are.
The 2018 version of the Eastern Eagles boasts fewer standouts than the 2016 team that came to Pullman and left with a three-point victory. But that’s not to say Eastern is a bunch of duds. Gage Guburd, who will have you know that he’s on all the billboards in Cheney, is still under center. Nsimba Webster is Eastern’s stud receiver. He’s no Cooper Kupp, but he’s not somebody to write off, either.
Eastern’s defense ranks 43rd among FCS teams and like I said, these first few games can make for some wacky stats. Eastern’s first two opponents were D-II Central Washington and Northern Arizona, which lost its stud QB early in that game.
Three Bold Predictions
I’m 0-for-6 on the season, but I nearly got one last week (“WSU will use three quarterbacks”) because Gardner Minshew, Trey Tinsley and Anthony Gordon were all sent out to play quarterback. Alas, Tinsley’s knee pad issue forced him to the sideline before he could call a play, and in came Gordon. That doesn’t count as three QBs, and I’m betting had Tinsley been wearing his knee pads correctly, we probably wouldn’t have seen Gordon anyway.
OK, here are this week’s bold predictions:
- Someone other than a quarterback will throw a touchdown pass
- The kicking team will recover an onside kick
- Boobie and Borghi will combine for 100+ rushing yards and exactly 3 total TDs
If someone kicks it onside, that probably means the game is closer than it should be. If someone other than a QB throws a TD pass, it’s probably an Eastern player, unless Leach’s Microsoft friend came up with another play on a napkin in Cambodia.
One of these days I’ll get one of these right.

Rivalry? Revenge? For Washington State, game vs. FCS neighbor Eastern Washington just ‘the next one’ – The Athletic
Despite the upset of two years ago, don’t call Washington State's matchup with Eastern Washington a special game. That would designate more importance to this game, and that is not allowed.
