Officials expect construction to last at least six weeks with a detour in place in the interim.

After weeks and weeks of construction delays, the Washington State Department of Transportation now has a start date for the bridge repair project that will shut down State Route 26 east of Othello. A WSDOT spokesman tells CougCenter construction is expected to get underway on the road October 8th, with a roughly 15-20 minute detour in place while construction goes on. The agency expects to confirm the start date early next week.

The closure will affect, at the very least, home games against the Oregon Ducks, California Golden Bears and the Arizona Wildcats. Whether construction crews will have the project done in time for the Apple Cup against the Washington Huskies is in question but we will certainly keep you up to date on the progress of the project but original estimates for completion pegged it at six weeks.

This is also almost certainly affect the drive home for students for Thanksgiving break so students should take care to plan for lots of extra time on the road and perhaps leave on Saturday or Sunday instead of Friday, depending on the weather over the pass.

The WSDOT’s detour is expected to add about, as we mentioned, 15-20 minutes to the trip each way but we have come up with some more creative alternatives.
