The Washington State Cougars host the San Jose Spartans in their home opener at Martin Stadium on Saturday night. WSU proved people like this idiot wrong when they dominated Wyoming in a 41-19 road win to begin the season.
Now, Wazzu faces a San Jose State team that lost to UC Davis in its own home opener. UC Davis was picked to finish ninth in the Big Sky conference, so it doesn’t bode well for a San Jose State team that no one expected to be good.
The Cougars are experts in losing to FCS teams to being a season, having done in 2015 and 2016. However, Wazzu showed in those years that losing to a lower division team is no guarantee for a losing season.
The Vegas oddsmakers won’t be swayed by that logic, having pegged the Cougs as 33.5 point favorites. Beating a Wyoming team with a solid returning difference soundly at elevation has won over some doubters. It also helps that graduate transfer quarterback Gardner Minshew looks comfortable in Mike Leach’s Air Raid offense.
WSU is wearing its gray-crimson-gray uniform combination. which has resulted in several frustrating losses recently. Here’s to bucking that trend.
