Washington State freshman middle blocker Magda Jehlářová was named Pac-12 defensive player of the week on Monday following a stellar performance over the weekend. The Cougars swept Oregon and Oregon State at home over the weekend for the first time since 2002 bringing their season record to 15-3. They also jumped to #21 in the latest AVCA Volleyball Coaches Poll.

Jehlářová finished her weekend with 14 blocks, 17 kills, and a hitting percentage of .400 over the two matches. Four of her blocks were solo which added to her conference leading 18 solo blocks on the year. She also leads the conference in total blocks with 99 so far.

The Cougars 3-1 win over Oregon on Friday was the first victory over the Ducks in Bohler since 2005. The Ducks tried to make it a game but the home court advantage proved too much for them as they could not keep up with the Cougars block party as they out-blocked them 14-5.

Home court advantage continued on Sunday for the 3-1 victory over the Beavers when they made 28 errors compared to the 15 for the Cougars. Jehlářová had a match-high seven blocks while hitting .533 overall. With multiple scoring runs of 3-0 the Cougs proved too much for the Beavers to finish off a strong weekend.

The Cougars will host the Arizona schools this weekend with Arizona starting things off on Friday at 7:00 pm and Arizona State on Sunday at noon. Both games will be on televised on the Pac-12 Network.

Mike Leach says Washington State didn’t give ‘clear message’ to defense during fall camp | The Spokesman-Review
It isn’t that Mike Leach envisioned WSU’s defense giving up 143 points in three games, ceding 1,715 total yards of offense through the first third of the Pac-12 schedule or going 10 full quarters without causing a turnover. But, perhaps he sensed something wasn’t right when the Cougars were exhausting themselves in Lewiston during the doldrums of fall camp.
