HCA: Cougars not quite finished with recruiting class

Mike Leach has two scholarships left to give.

Yesterday’s national signing day didn’t quite get the Washington State Cougars to a full 25-man class for 2019, so we are left to speculate who those two final scholarships will go to.

The first bit of speculation centers on the transfer of Eastern Washington quarterback Gage Gubrud. Gubrud reportedly had his request denied by the NCAA for a sixth year of eligibility and now is appealing that case. If the Cougars lose out on him they may turn to another quarterback transfer or more likely another quality player in the transfer portal. It also could go to a late rising junior college or high school player who has flown under the radar.

As for the other spot, I would expect the Cougars to pursue a safety/nickel type prospect with the loss of previous commit Don Chapman to the North Carolina Tar Heels. The Cougars are also pursued safety Sione Vaki in the late signing period, but he signed with the Utah Utes yesterday. I think there is a good chance the Cougars now make a nationwide search for a safety prospect similar to how they handled the defensive line position this signing period.

If past is prologue I think we can expect coach Mike Leach and company to bring in some quality prospects with their late signees.
