With two outs in the top of the ninth inning of a 3-2 game, Washington State (6-17) had the game-tying runner on third when Dillon Plew grounded out to short to end the game and the Cougars come back fell short as they dropped their non-conference game to Loyola Marymount on Monday afternoon.
Loyola (15-8) broke a 1-1 tie in the sixth inning with a two-out RBI and then extended their lead once again in the seventh with another two-out RBI.
Heading into the final inning, the Cougars needed two runs to hopefully extend the game. Anthony Notaro started things off with a single to left and Danny Sinatro followed that with a single himself. Garrett Gouldsmith popped up a bunt that was caught on a diving catch in an attempt to advance the runners. Matt Voelker then threw a wild pitch to the next batter that allowed the both runners to advance.
Brody Barnum stepped up to the plate with runners in scoring position in a pinch hitting role and came through with an RBI-groundout that left Sinatro on third before the ground out ended the game.
The Cougars dropped all three of their games against No. 22 UC Irvine this past weekend and finished off the road series with Loyola on Monday. The Cougars have now lost 9 consecutive games.
Washington State will return to Pullman on Friday in hopes of turning things around in a three game series against Stanford with first pitch coming at 4:00 PM at Bailey-Brayton. With most of their season so far being spent on the road, Friday’s game will be just their fourth game played in Pullman this season.
