Gardner Minshew to Jacksonville media: ‘As long as I’m getting a chance, I’m excited’

The quarterback’s first impression with his new team was a favorable one. (Naturally.)

As Washington State Cougars fans know well, one of the most endearing things about Gardner Minshew II — beyond his ability to put his team in the end zone — is his personality.

After being taken in the 6th round of the NFL Draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars, he jumped on the phone to take some questions from the local media. And they got to experience the charm first hand.

You can listen to the interview in the tweet above, but here are some of the noteworthy responses:

Asked if he was “at all dismayed about not going on day two” — in the second or third rounds — Minshew responded in typical Minshew fashion and with the typical Minshew authenticity.

“Aww no, man,” he said. “I’m at the point where, just getting ... when I was a little kid, if you would have told me that I’m getting picked in the NFL Draft, I don’t care if it’s the first pick or the last pick, like that is such a blessing, man, just to get the opportunity.

“Wherever I go, as long as I’m getting a chance, I’m excited.”

He then was asked whether he thought all of this was possible a year ago.

“So, ‘possible’ and ‘likely’ are two different things,” Minshew said. “It’s been crazy, the journey I’ve been on. I’m just so blessed, so fortunate.”

Another reporter asked why he thought he was still around in the 6th round.

“I don’t know. And I don’t care,” Minshew said. “All I ever needed was a chance. Out of high school I had no offers, out of junior college I had one offer. That’s all I’ve ever said, I just needed a chance. And once I got it, I’m gonna run with it, so I’m just excited to be drafted at all.”
