Gage Gubrud, the graduate transfer from Eastern Washington University, was listed as a top-50 quarterback on Monday according to a Yahoo Sports list. While it is still unknown if we will see Gubrud start this season it is highly expected he will be the man out there on August 31st against New Mexico State.
Yahoo broke down their top-50 into four tiers with the top tier only consisting of Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa and Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence. Tier 2 consists of spots 3-10 and is quarterbacks that are Heisman contenders that will give their team 10+ wins this season. Tier 3 is spots 11-34 and are quarterbacks that could work their name into Heisman consideration and can give their teams 8+ wins. The fourth and final tier rounds out spots 35-50 and are guys that wont see Heisman talk but can get their team to a bowl game if they are not benched.
The final tier is where we can find Gubrud. Sitting at the 46th ranked quarterback, Gubrud sits just 1 spot above Oregon State senior Jake Luton. Both quarterbacks have been dealing with injuries the past year and are hoping to finish out their college careers on a high note.
Gubrud comes into this year with just under 10,000 passing yards on 64% passing and 87 touchdowns with 32 interceptions. He is looking to beat out redshirt freshman Cam Cooper, redshirt seniors Trey Tinsley and Anthony Gordon, and redshirt sophomore John Bledsoe. After the year Gardner Minshew had as a transfer quarterback it would not be a surprise to see Leach go with a guy that he was able to convince to join the Cougars for his final year.
The other conference quarterbacks joining Gubrud and Luton in the fourth tier are Utah senior Tyler Huntley at 39 and Colorado senior Steven Montez. Three quarterbacks from the conference are in the third tier with Washington transfer Jacob Eason at 32, Arizona senior Khalil Tate at 26 and USC sophomore J.T. Daniels at 24. There is a big jump from Daniels to the next conference guy as Oregon senior Justin Herbert (8) and Stanford senior K.J. Costello (6) round out the top of the list in the second tier.
UCLA projected starter Dorian Thompson-Robinson, California’s Chase Garbers, and whoever will be at the helm for Arizona State (only one quarterback on their roster has played (Dillon Sterling - 2 attempts last season) are not mentioned and not ranked in the top 50.
