The annual “Mayor of Maple Valley Open,” takes place tonight at Druids Glen Golf Course in Covington, Washington, supporting both Hilinski’s Hope and the Avery Huffman Defeat DIPG Foundation. There aren’t any spots left in the tournament, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still be part of the fun ... and fundraising.
The tournament is hosted by Washington State Cougars alumnus and local media personality Ian Furness, whose sports talk show for 950-AM KJR will be broadcast from there from 1-3 p.m. with a shotgun start for the golf tournament at 5 p.m. There’s a raffle that you can participate in without being registered for the tournament, or you can purchase a charity cocktail.
I know that Tyler Hilinski’s parents, Kym and Mark, will be there, as well as 247Sports.com’s Brandon Huffman — the foundation is in the name of his daughter, whose life was taken by the rare brain cancer DIPG. Furness let us know that it’s great if anyone just wants to stop by and say hello.
I will be there for a while with my family. Come find me if you want to chat. I’ll be the guy with the beard and the Cougar gear. That should be easy, right?
Side note: The Hilinskis have been in Washington for about a week, and they started their visit by throwing out the ceremonial first pitch at the Seattle Mariners Coug night last weekend. If you didn’t catch the video yet ... well, you might want to have box of tissues handy:
A special moment before tonight’s game as the family of former @WSUCougarFB QB Tyler Hilinski threw out the first pitch.

Mike Leach: Cardinals supplemental draft pick Jalen Thompson is 1st-class
“He’s really explosive, jumps high, gets to balls you don’t think he can get to, and he hits a ton, ’cause he’s not a really big guy but I mean he just unloads it,” Leach told Doug & Wolf on Thursday.
Tony Pauline Mailbag: NFL Draft, Jalen Thompson, and Rookie Impacts
I was told the night before Wednesday’s draft that the Packers decided not to use a pick on Thompson during the supplemental draft despite the fact they liked him. Their game plan was to go hard if Thompson was not selected in the draft and offer him a big free agent contract. I was informed the Texans put in a fifth-round bid for Thompson but it was too late as the Cardinals got to him first.

Washington State: Mike Leach has engineered an 11-2 season that led to a top-12 finish in the AP poll at both Texas Tech and Washington State. There’s no questioning his prowess as an offensive guru, but can he recruit – or at least develop – players at a level that leads to consistent 10-plus win seasons where the Cougars can contend for Pac-12 Championships and a potential playoff berth?

At this point, we don’t know whether or not offensive tackle Andre Dillard will be a success at the NFL level. We do know, however, that the rookie first-round pick out of Washington State has all the tools you look for at the position.
