HCA: Ahmed Ali leaves basketball program

The news comes a few months after deciding he would stay

NCAA Basketball: Washington State at Stanford Stan Szeto-USA TODAY Sports

Washington State point guard Ahmed Ali has left the basketball program on Monday a few months after deciding to remove his name from the transfer portal according to Theo Lawson of the Spokesman-Review.

The 5’11’’ senior had intentions of leaving the program in April but first year head coach Kyle Smith changed his mind and he withdrew in mid-June. He had said during that time he would go on to learn about Smith and decided that staying in Pullman was his best opportunity.

Ali only played just one season for the Cougars and averaged 7.3 points, 1.8 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game while starting 24 of 32 games for the Cougars. Before joining the Cougar he spent two years at Eastern Florida State College and averaged 16.9 points and 4.8 assists per game in the 70 games he played and was named to the NJCAA Division 1 All-America second team.

Smith believed that Ali would have a hard time beating out former Montana State guard Isaac Bonton and would be playing off the bench. Jervae Robinson and newcomer Noah Williams will join Bonton as the point guards who will run the point for the Cougars next season.
