The Gardner Minshew era has begun in Jacksonville

A year ago today, Gardner Minshew II was waking up after leading the Washington State Cougars to a 31-0 win against the San Jose State Spartans in his second game at WSU.

Today, Minshew woke up fresh off throwing for 275 yards and two touchdowns in his NFL debut.

Minshew wasn’t supposed to see action for the Jacksonville Jaguars, but with Nick Foles suffering a serious injury, Minshew came in and looked like he was back playing in Martin Stadium. Minshew completed 22-of-25 passes, including his first 13.

Foles suffered a fractured left clavicle and is out “indefinitely” as he is set to have surgery on Monday. The Jaguars could bring in a veteran quarterback, either in free agency or through a trade. Or, they could just let the Minshew era roll on.

They should let the Minshew era roll on.

One was for pointing. One was for targeting.

As dissimilar as they were, two officiating calls in the third quarter had Washington State coaches and players wincing and wondering Saturday during their 59-17 win against Northern Colorado.

Wins over New Mexico State and Northern Colorado aren't exactly résumé builders, but they have allowed the Cougars to break in new quarterback Anthony Gordon with encouraging results. The fifth-year senior's time in the system has proved beneficial: He has thrown for nearly 900 yards already with nine touchdowns passes and just one pick. And the Cougars' back-to-back 50-point outings represent just the sixth time they've reached the half-century mark in consecutive games since 1936.
