The Washington State Cougars women’s basketball team is off to a hot start this year thanks to the help of Charlisse Leger-Walker who was named Pac-12 Women’s freshman of the week on Monday. The Cougars are coming off two rivalry wins after beating Washington this past Friday and Idaho on Sunday. The guard from Waikato, New Zealand has put up 49 points, 15 rebounds, 8 assists, 4 blocks and 7 steals in just two games.
On Friday, in their season opener against Washington, Leger-Walker put up 20 points, 4 steals, 3 blocks, 3 assists, and 8 rebounds to help lead the Cougs to a 60-52 victory at Hec Ed in Seattle. She then doubled down on her great performance and on Sunday put up 29 points, 5 assists, and 8 rebounds in a 74-55 victory over the Vandals. She would put up 24 of her 29 points in the second half which puts her at third all time in most points scored in a half
She is the first player in Washington State history to put up back-to-back 20-point games to start a career and her 49 points is the most by any Cougar in their first two games in program history. She is also the first player in Washington State history to earn the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week in their first week of play.
The last time a Cougar won the Freshman of the Week award was during the 2016-17 season when Chanelle Molina won it twice. Leger-Walker is just the fourth Cougar to win the award joining Molina and Lia Galdeira, who each won the award twice and Borislava Hristova who earned the award three times during her first year.
The Cougars will stay at home to finish out 2020 with games against Oregon State on Saturday, Oregon next Monday, and Eastern Washington on Tuesday, December 22nd. They will then be off for the Holidays and pick back up on January 1st on the road against Utah.
