Washington State Athletic Director Pat Chun was appointed to the NCAA Division 1 council last week and began his four year term on July 1st. The group is responsible for the day-to-day decision making for the NCAA.
The council is made up of athletic directors, athletics administrators, senior women administrators, athletic representatives, and student athletes from all of the Division 1 conferences. He joins Rick George, the Athletic Director at Colorado, as the representatives of the Pac-12.
Chun is not new to being on boards and committees as he served on the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics, NCAA Baseball Rules Committee, co-chair on the Pac-12 Social Justice and Anti-Racism Advisory Group, and serves as a member of the NCAA Pathways program. He also works closely with the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and the Black Student-Athlete Association at Washington State.
Chun said, “It’s an honor to be selected to the NCAA Division 1 Council and represent the tremendous membership of the Pac-12 Conference, it’s student-athletes and coaches.”
Washington State President Kirk Shultz added “Pat has established himself as a true leader within collegiate athletics, not only guiding our athletic department, but at the conference and national levels as well... He has instituted impactful programming for Cougar student-athletes in the areas of mental health, diversity, equity, and inclusion, serving as an advocate for the student-athletes.”
Last year, he was named the 2019 Under Armor Athletic Director of the Year - the first for a Washington State Athletic Director.
The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has appointed Washington State University Director of Athletics Pat Chun to its Division I Council. Chun’s four-year appointment began July 1, 2020.
Kyle Smith turned some heads in his first year as the Washington State men’s basketball head coach leading the Cougs to more wins than they’ve had in eight seasons.
