Monday rewatch: 2001 Sun Bowl

Washington St. v Washington X Thompson

We’re going to have to wait a year to see whether Washington State extends its bowl game streak to six straight seasons in which games were played, but until then we can now re-live one of the previous bowl classics thanks to YouTube.

Earlier this summer the YouTube user PigDog Video2001 blessed us with the 2001 Sun Bowl. Thanks PigDog.

I hadn’t previously watched this game, so it was a bit jarring to see Kyle Orton. It was just as jarring to see him attempt 74 passes in a game in 2001. Who does he think he is, Connor Halliday?

Unfortunately for Orton, the Cougars had Lamont Thompson. Thompson finished the game with 10 tackles, five pass deflections and two interceptions.

If you make it all the way through you can enjoy some unnecessary anxiety as Purdue recovers an on-side kick in the final two minutes trailing 33-27. I knew the result and I still expected Purdue to score.

Enjoy!

Loss of college football games a blow for Pullman businesses | The Spokesman-Review
The athletes weren’t the only ones affected when Washington State University’s fall football season was canceled by the coronavirus pandemic. Merchants in tiny Pullman, Washington, who depend on big football crowds say they are losing a major chunk of their annual income.

Gardner Minshew getting comfortable with a new offense - Big Cat Country
For the Jacksonville Jaguars, this year’s offense will take on an entirely new look. With the addition of offensive coordinator Jay Gruden, that should be expected. How long it takes to get out of “diapers”, as Gruden noted to reporters just over a week ago, is yet to be known, however, it is certainly heading in the right direction, led by second-year quarterback Gardner Minshew II.

Basketball:

Cougs can likely use the extra time | Sports | lmtribune.com
A Pac-12 ruling last week will prohibit Washington State’s men’s basketball team from playing a game before the new year.

But with two-year superstar Cougar forward CJ Elleby now officially departed for the NBA draft, and with a whole mess of hyped recruits incoming, coach Kyle Smith could probably use some extra prep time.
