WSU soccer beats Utah to stay in first place

Sweet, sweet vengeance

PULLMAN, WA - September 5: Washington State women’s soccer team defeat Hawaii 7-0 at Lower Soccer Field Jack Ellis/CougCenter

Good afternoon, Coug fans!

Last night your Washington State Cougars soccer cleaned house against Utah with a late goal to secure the game, 1-0. Let’s take a look!

While the game ended with a great shot from junior Grayson Lynch, there was plenty of action leading up to that moment. For example, a stat that you might like to see: the Cougs outshot Utah 20-7 in this game. This game.

But let’s just all admire this goal:

Eight of those shots were on goal for the Cougs, whereas just two were on goal for Utah. Freshman goalkeeper Nadia Cooper kept her head high in this match again, not allowing anything past her. The Cougs stayed aggressive on offense, including a near-miss from Sydney Studer at minute 31.

This match keeps the Cougs’ perfect road record alive — they’ve also allowed zero goals away from home — and also marks fifth-year Sydney Pulver’s 87th match, breaking the previous record she tied last game.

One thing you’ll notice just by looking at the stats of the game: Utah comes off nearly as aggressive with fouls and saves, specifically in the first period. There’s no contest in offensive pressure, and attacks from the starters.

For the Cougs- the highest amount of shots came from Lynch (6), but we also had opportunities from Elyse Bennett (4), Sydney Studer (3), and Enzi Broussard (2). However, the highest shot count from any individual Utah player was 2, from Megan Lusher.

If you have any interest in Coach Shulenberger’s postgame, please see below:

Once again the Cougs dominate against the Pac 12, and are on the road still, taking on Colorado on 10/3. Don’t forget to watch the game- 11 am PST on Pac 12 Networks!

The Cougars need to win in the trenches. That can be said about any football game, but the trenches are the most important part of the football field.
