Washington State safety George Hicks III was named Pac-12 defensive player of the week while offensive tackle Liam Ryan was named Pac-12 offensive lineman of the week the conference announced on Monday. These awards come after the Cougars 31-24 victory over Oregon State on Saturday. It is the second consecutive week a Cougar has won one these Pac-12 awards as Brennan Jackson was named defensive lineman of the week last week.
Hicks III finished the victory over Oregon State with a career high 10 tackles while adding in his first interception of the season. He tallied 7 of those 10 tackles in the second half and was also involved in the game winning tackle on 4th down with under a minute left in the game when he met the Beavers’ Trey Lowe one yard short of the line to gain. He is the first defensive player to win this award since Jahad Woods won the award in 2018.
Ryan was apart of an offensive line that allowed Cougar quarterback Jayden de Laura to throw for 399 yards and 3 touchdowns while completing 32 of 46 passing attempts. As a team, the Cougars also were able to rush for 92 yards and one touchdown. This is his first time winning the award since week 1 of the 2019 season.
Both Hicks III and Ryan will look to continue this success as they host Stanford this weekend. That game will kickoff at 4:30 p.m. PT on Saturday and can be seen on ESPNU. The conference also announced Monday that the Cougars October 23 game against No. 19 BYU will kick off at 12:30 p.m. PT and will be televised on FS1.
