WSU soccer heads down to Tempe

Taking on ASU tonight at 7 p.m. PT.

PULLMAN, WA - October 10: Washington State women’s soccer team defeats Pac 12 opponent California 2-0 at Lower Soccer Field Jack Ellis/CougCenter

Good morning, Coug fans! Tonight your Washington State Cougars soccer take on Arizona State in Tempe and look to stay undefeated on the road. Game starts at 7 p.m. PT, so set your alarms now! You’ll be able to watch it via ASU’s live stream.

Let’s take a peak at what ASU is bringing to the table.

ASU is sitting at 8-5-1 overall, with a conference record of 0-4-1. Right now, they’re knee deep in a losing streak- being taken down by both Oregon schools and USC/UCLA.

Their top scorer is Nicole Douglas- who leads in goals, points, shots, shots on goal, and ties this season with games started/games played. This season, she has taken 31 shots on goal and accumulated 33 points, 11 of which have been in conference play. She has a .474% for shots on goal.

ASU also has a standout freshman goalkeeper, Birta Gudlaugs. She brings a .609% saves stat for conference play. Gudlaugs offers similar stats to their other keeper, Julia Ortega, who has only had one game of conference play under her belt. Both are freshmen.

Eva van Deursen leads the team in assists, with a conference record of 2. It’s okay, not everyone can be Enzi Broussard. van Deursen serves second in command under Douglas in points, bringing 4 to the conference record so far.

So far, the Cougs and the Sun Devils have yet to share a conference opponent this season. But, we can take a peek at their game against USC, who is currently ranked just above Wazzu in the Pac 12 standings.

The summary of the game, in a sense, was USC keeping the bar just out of ASU’s reach. ASU had a strong first half, which is something of a pattern for them, and their coach Graham Winkworth stacks the loss against the windy weather conditions. In the event of inclement weather, I trust the Cougs will be able to handle anything thrown at them.

But, that doesn’t change the fact that ASU was largely able to compete with USC. They were able to tie the game in the first half, and unfortunately couldn’t overcome USC taking the lead back in the second half.

I’m excited for this game! It will be streamed through Arizona State, so don’t forget to check it out and cheer on your Cougs!
